Wetland (read more here)
A grass-choked seasonal drainage is being returned to a healthy wetland where native plants attract a wide variety of birds, bees, and other wildlife. This educational demonstration project receives support from student, civic, business, and government organizations. (Begun 2017) Vegetation Management (access the plan here) We focus on these broad goals: • Improving conditions for recreation and outdoor education at the park • Improving habitat for wildlife, including pollinators • Managing noxious weeds and reintroducing plants native to the Palouse region • Increasing resilience to wildfire and climate change. Our new vegetation management plan, to be updated regularly, describes vegetation-management challenges facing the park, gives detail on current conditions in each of 19 management units, states management objectives, suggests treatments, and describes our vegetation monitoring efforts. Native Species Plantings (read more here) Plant native species, according to the vegetation management plan. Beaver Dam Analogs Build beaver dam analogs to help slow the flow of water through the lower wetlands at Phillips Farm, and eventually provide habitat for native amphibians and birds. (Begun 2021) Trail Markers Add and maintain trail markers and interpretive signage. Orchards Continue planting apple varieties and other fruit trees in the new orchard and rejuvenating the old orchard. Invasive Species Control the spread of aggressive non-native invasive plants. Constructed a permanent, double-vault restroom at the main trailhead. (Installed 2017, with funding from the Idaho State Department of Parks and Recreation: Recreational Trails Program ($26,908) and Latah County Community Foundation ($2,500)) Dock Constructed new dock for the upper pond. (Accomplished 2015, with funding from Latah County Community Foundation ($1,150)) Structure for classes/storage Constructed an enclosed structure that can be used as a classroom. (Accomplished 2012) |
